Overview

“International Collaborative Program in Sustainable Materials and Technology for Industries” or known as “i-SMaT” is an international Ph.D. program developed based on the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The aim of this Ph.D. program is to shape our students to be pioneers, researchers, or specialists in sustainable materials and technology. This program has been established as a joint Ph.D. program between Nagoya University (Japan), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), and industries in both countries. Students will have a chance to study in both universities depending on their enrolment and research plans. For this program, it is required for students to travel to the partnered university and stay at least 1 year for their research work.

Throughout their three-years study, students will be supervised by both Japanese and Thai supervisors, who are truly experts in their fields. The students will also have opportunities to visit various industries in both Thailand and Japan to harvest practical skills. Research projects conducted by the students can be divided into four main themes: 1) Sustainable Materials from Natural Resources, 2) Smart and Functional Materials, 3) Materials for Health and Wellness, and 4) Computational Materials, Data Science & Simulation. The students who graduated from this Ph.D. program will receive a joint certificate of degree completion between the two universities.

Why this program at Chula ?

The ambition of the i-SMaT program is to combine various natural resources in Thailand with cutting edge technologies available in Japan to create innovative solutions for solving industrial problems and current social issues. We hope to generate highly-equipped pioneers and researchers that could utilize their knowledge of sustainable materials and technology. We chose this particular research field because of the world bio-circular green (BCG) economy. We want to shape the next generations with this core knowledge to enable themselves to find their career path in the BCG economy that fits with the Thai national agenda.

Our i-SMaT program is a 3-year study with at least 1 year of research work in the partnered university to experience conducting research projects in abroad. The students will be supervised by academics from both institutions (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and Nagoya University, Japan). They will participate in collaborative international research and we encourage students to attend online international seminars related to sustainable materials and technology topics. In addition, they will have a chance to visit related industries in both countries (Thailand and Japan), which helps them to able to visualize real world experiences.

In the 21st century, when technology is developing faster than ever before, we want to position students at the forefront of innovations related to sustainable materials. To develop innovation skills, students are required to participate in special research projects according to their own interests, and they will receive support from their mentors who have access to the latest projects in their field through collaborations with local and international institutes. During their study, the students have to publish two original publications indexed in Web of Science.

Career Opportunities

After graduation, students will receive a Doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.), they can pursue jobs (scientists, researchers, engineers) in research and development sectors in the industries related to sustainable materials and technology either at local or international level. They will gain connections to the industries as well as professional experiences during their study.
