Overview
The program in biotechnology is a multidisciplinary program offering both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees under the supervision of academic faculty members from The Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Chulalongkorn University and 9 departments in the Faculty of Science Biochemistry, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Environmental Science, Food Science and Technology, Marine Science, and Microbiology Department . Integrated researches ranging from biomolecule identification to process technology development are provided in order to prepare for biotechnology careers in either academic of private sectors. To produce high qualified human resource with excellent scientific knowledge, skills and attitudes in biotechnology field to work on applied and advanced research responding to local and global demand
Why this program at Chula
To produce master’s degree graduates with expertise in biotechnology, who can apply their knowledge to advanced research or practical applications in various organizations, both public and private, at laboratory and industrial levels. Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that integrates knowledge from various fields to address and develop solutions in industries, medicine, agriculture, and environmental sectors. The goal is to produce high-quality graduates with comprehensive knowledge in biotechnology, capable of analyzing, conducting research, keeping up with global academic advancements, and integrating relevant knowledge for effective work in diverse settings, from laboratories to industrial environments. These graduates will be proficient biotechnologists, capable of combining their expertise with applications in key industries, contributing to research production, or generating new knowledge in biotechnology to support national development or solve related problems.

Admission Requirements
1. Admission Requirements for the M.Sc. Program (Thesis Non-coursework)
- Academic Qualifications
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.25. The Program Committee will review and approve applications based on academic qualifications. - English Language Proficiency
Applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency by submitting scores from one of the following tests: - CU-TEP: Minimum score of 30
- IELTS: Minimum score of 3.0
- TOEFL PBT: Minimum score of 400
- TOEFL CBT: Minimum score of 97
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 32
2. Admission Requirements for the M.Sc. Program (Coursework and Thesis)
- Academic Qualifications
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field or be in their final semester of study at the undergraduate level. The Program Committee will review and approve applications based on academic qualifications. - English Language Proficiency

3. Admission Requirements for the Ph.D. Program (Dissertation Non-coursework/ Coursework and Dissertation)
- Academic Qualifications
Track (1) Applicants must hold a master’s degree or be studying in the final semester of their master’s program, or the Program Committee may approve the application on a case-by-case basis. Admission will be based on a review of academic qualifications and research potential.
Track (2) Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or be studying in the final semester of their bachelor’s program with a minimum GPA of 3.25. The Program Committee may approve the application on a case-by-case basis.
- English Language Proficiency
Applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency by submitting scores from one of the following tests:
- CU-TEP: Minimum score of 45
- IELTS: Minimum score of 4.0
- TOEFL PBT: Minimum score of 450
- TOEFL CBT: Minimum score of 133
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 45
Remark for application
- Applicants who have graduated from programs conducted in English are exempted from submitting English proficiency test scores.
- Applicants without an English score can apply to the program; however, they must submit a valid English score by the interview date for the Biotechnology Program.
- All English test scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. The submitted scores must be valid through the date of the final decision announcement.
- Applicants who are studying in the final semester of their current degree program must submit their degree certificate by the first registration date at Chulalongkorn University. Admission will be finalized once the degree certificate is provided and the required GPA for the program is met.
Special Track of Admission
Prerequisites (Program ID: .4659., ..4660..)
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or a related degree or be studying in the final semester of the bachelor’s level or the Program Committee agrees to allow the applicants to apply into the program.
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with minimum 0 GPA.
- Applicants must have an English score (TOEFL or IELTS or CU-TEP). The minimum English scores for special track application are 45 (CU-TEP), 4.0 (IELTS), 450 (TOEFL PBT), 133 (TOEFL CBT), or 45 (TOEFL iBT).
*** The applicants, who received a diploma and 2-year bachelor’s degree, must submit a transcript of their diploma along with a degree certificate.
*** The applicants, who are studying in the final semester of their current degree level, must submit their degree certificate by the first registration date of Chulalongkorn University. The admission will be completed when the applicants provide the degree certificate and meet the required GPA of the Program.
Additional Information of the Program
- Program in Biotechnology offers a double degree program with Osaka University, Japan. The admitted students in regular program who meet the requirement of Osaka University can apply for double degree program.
- Some coursework may be in English.
