Outbound Student Exchange Program

Exchange students who go to study at a partner university for one or two semesters under an existing MOU or network.

When to Apply

Apply/Renew Passport – Regardless of your program, you need a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return.

Take language proficiency test – Required scores of the language test, you should register for your language proficiency test early to avoid delays. (The scores should not be more than 2 years before your intended start date)

Review Partner Universities – Before making a decision, visiting their websites and reading their Fact Sheet will help you on planning your exchange. You should recheck your GPAX and English result whether they meet the requirements or not.

Students are required to consult with your program/faculty coordinator – If you would like to request the transferal of credits. You should begin narrowing down your choices. Select 1-3 programs now to ensure you complete the requirements on time.

Attend the Chula Study Abroad Fair or Chula Outbound Student Exchange Program Info Session (if any) – This info sessions are a great way to learn more about specific the Chula outbound student application, exchange destinations, quotas, programs, hear from past students, and speak to our staff. Keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming events/info sessions.

Eligibility

To be eligible :

  • You must be Chula full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in courses at Chula.
  • For an undergraduate student, you must have successfully completed at least 2 semesters at Chula.
  • You should not be in the last year of study, you must return and study at Chulalongkorn University for at least 1 semester after studying abroad.
    (If you are a student in senior year, studying abroad during your final quarter at this will likely delay your actual date of graduation.)
  • For a graduate student, you must not be in the last year of study.
  • Having a GPAX of at least 2.75 for undergraduate students and 3.00 for graduate students.
  • Having a proof of your language proficiency that meet the requirements.
  • Having good conduct, behavior, responsibility, appropriate qualities and suitability to represent Chulalongkorn University overseas.

*Students planning to graduate early or study abroad during their senior year, should be aware that it can take around 2-4 months for transcripts from host university to arrive at Chula and additional time for applied towards your degree program and credits to be appear on your transcript. Be sure to review the Office of the Registrar’s graduation deadlines, and complete the credit transfer process as soon as possible. Moreover, if you are study abroad during your final semester at Chula, this will definitely affect delay your actual date of graduation.

Requirements

  • GPAX requirement: at least 2.75 for an undergraduate student, and at least 3.00 for a graduate applicant at the time of application
  • Required scores of the language test (The score should not be valid for more than 2 years)
  • Meet any additional requirements set by the partner university
TOEFL:
  • iBT: Minimum Score 79
IELTS:
  • A minimum score of 6.5 in overall band with a minimum of 6.0 in each band

*Applicants are required to submit only one of the highest English language
proficiency scores

Japanese program and other
  • Applicants who wish to study only in the Japanese program at Japanese
    universities are required to submit only the JLPT score and sit for an online
    interview in Japanese, organized by the Japanese Section, Department of
    Eastern Languages, Faculty of Arts.
  • Applicants who wish to study only at universities which do not use
    English as a medium of instruction are required to submit only the relevant
    language proficiency score (e.g. CEFR, HSK, TOPIK, CILS, DELF, DELE)

**Each university has different eligibility requirements including English requirements; therefore, students are required to search for information about partner universities via website, fact sheet and students will not be allowed to contact with Chula partner universities in this matter. OIA is the only main contact person for contacting/coordinating with partner universities.

Documents

  • One student’s photo (on white background)
  • An official academic transcript with the latest academic record issued by the Office of the Registrar [CR25]
  • A Language proficiency tests score record (The score should not be more than 2 years)
  • A photocopy of the first page of the passport (you need a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return to Thailand.)
  • A nomination letter from your Faculty of the student’s affiliation
  • Two recommendation letters (E-signature is allowed.)
  • Statement of purpose essay (500 words or one A4 page, free form)
  • A study plan (the OIA format)
  • A consent agreement with applicant’s signature.
  • A table showing the course(s) the applicants are interested in taking at the partner university (the OIA format) that are equivalent to the course(s) offered by Chula and thus the credits earned from the course(s) can be transferred to the home university. (This table is only required for those who wish to have credits transferred). One table is required for one partner university of the students’ choice. If the applicants choose more than one university, they are required to merge all the tables into one file before uploading to application system.

Students are required to search for information about partner universities via website and students will not be allowed to contact with Chula partner universities in this matter. OIA is the only main contact person for contacting/coordinating with partner universities.

Outbound

How to Apply to a Chula Student Exchange Program

STEP 1: Enter OIA website to find information, procedure and requirements.

* Students are advised to consult with your program/faculty coordinator if they would like to request the transferal of credits.
**Students are required to search for information about partner universities via website and students will not be allowed to contact with Chula partner universities in this matter. OIA is the only main contact person for contacting/coordinating with partner universities.

 

STEP 2: Enter outbound application link, complete, submit your online application form and upload related documents.

Applicants must be nominated by the Faculty/School of their affiliation and they can choose up to 3 partner universities according to appropriateness and their preference in taking part in the program.

 

STEP 3: Check information about the Japanese interview via the OIA website (this step is only for applicants who submit JLPT scores) or the AIMS/AUN-ACTS interview (for applicants who have applied for a scholarship).

 

STEP 4: Check results announced via OIA website.

 

STEP 5: Attend outbound student exchange orientation / pre-departure sessions.

 

STEP 6: The OIA will nominate you to the partner university.

Selected students will be nominated by email or online nomination to the Partner University.

 

STEP 7: Complete and submit the application and required documents to the partner university.

Once you have been nominated to a partner university, you will receive the application process email from the partner university and are required to complete that university’s application as an exchange student.

Remember your deadline (if any).

 

STEP 8: Get the acceptance package.

Students are strongly recommended not to make any travel or housing bookings for their exchange until they have received their acceptance letters. Approximately 4-6 weeks after the Partner University’s application deadline.

The acceptance letters and documents for visa application will be sent directly to the student’s email address. If partner university send the acceptance package to OIA, our exchange coordinator will be sent an email to the student to pick it up at OIA Office and this letter will be required for visa application.

*Students cannot withdraw from the Outbound Student Exchange Program with Chula Partner Universities (University level) after receiving acceptance from the partner university.

 

STEP 9: Contact your faculty and/or Central Office of Registrar for further processes (credit transfer, withdrawal from study, etc.).

Pay tuition fees to Chula before leaving for the exchange program, apply for a leave of absence from the Faculty of your affiliation, and consult with the Faculty Exchange Coordinator on the courses or number of credits to take abroad to ensure that they match with the requirements of your Faculty.

 

STEP 10: Collect visa application documents at OIA office (if any).

 

STEP 11: Proceed with logistic arrangement. (air-ticket, visa, insurance, accommodation, etc.)

 

STEP 12: Get ready to study abroad and enjoy international experience

 

STEP 13: Return home

Before you return you should request the Official Transcript (in English) online or ask the partner university coordinator to send it directly to the OIA Office.

 

STEP 14: Get your transcript and transfer your credits earned from abroad.

Fees

If you’re an exchange student on a valid student exchange agreement, you will have their tuition fees waived by the host university. However, during your exchange, you will continue to pay tuition fees to your home university [Chulalongkorn University].

Students participating in the student exchange program will be expected to cover other expenses relating to your exchange. All expenses you will be responsible for include the following:

  • Travel Insurance
  • Quarantine Fees
  • Vaccinations

Student Exchange Programme Scholarships

The Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Programme is SEAMEO RIHED’s regional initiative to support the mobility of students and enhance cooperation in higher education among countries in Asia.

The Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) programme, formally known as M-I-T, aims to create a vibrant student mobility programme for citizens of all SEAMEO member countries. It has a long history, emerging from the Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand (M-I-T) Student Mobility Pilot Project which was initiated in 2009 as collaboration between the governments of the three countries and SEAMEO RIHED. The M-I-T project was a pilot project. Following the success of the pilot project, it is now being turned into a fully-fledged Asian programme. Additional Southeast Asian nations are now invited to join the efforts of the three existing countries, and collectively develop a regional Southeast Asian student mobility programme.

Students who are selected to join the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program will participate in the program for one semester and must enroll with a minimum of three subjects or 9 – 12 credits.

Students will be sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) for Chula student who apply for the exchange program to the host university in ASEAN country [Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, Philippines and Singapore].

Details of the Scholarship
– Round-trip international airfare (economy class only)
– International health insurance
– Accommodation and cost of living during the stay in the host universities.

Additionally, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) will sponsor students who apply for the exchange program to Japan and Republic of Korea if the home university has already completely nominated 5 students to the host university in ASEAN country.

The ASEAN Credit Transfer System (ACTS) was initiated by the ASEAN University Network with the primary objective of facilitating student and academic mobility in the ASEAN region. The system has been managed by the AUN-ACTS Secretariat which has been hosted by Universitas Indonesia since 2010.

This scholarship for Chula student who apply for the exchange program to the host university in 9 ASEAN country [Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos].

Exchange students must take courses for 30 ECTS credits per semester [around 20 CU credits]

Each scholarship of 850 Euro/month for 5 months + 1500 travel allowance

Outbound Postgraduate Research Student Exchange Program

Exchange students who come to conduct research at Chula under an existing MOU or network.

Overview

Chula postgraduate students may join the Postgraduate Research Student Exchange for 3-12 months at a partner university that has entered an MOU or network with Chula. Their research activities may include data collection or collaboration with other researchers.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • You must be a current Chula student in a Master’s degree Program / Doctoral Degree (PhD Candidate) Program.
  • Having a GPAX of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale
  • Having a proof of your language proficiency that meet the requirements. (Each university has different eligibility requirements; students must go through each of their preferred details for information before applying.)
  • Having good conduct, behavior, responsibility, appropriate qualities and suitability to represent Chulalongkorn University overseas.
  • Having contacted academic staff at the partner university who is willing to discuss your research plans and supervise your research work project.

Postgraduate Research Student Exchange Program


Before Applying

  1. You should search for research exchange opportunities to find a suitable supervisor to discuss your research plans.
  2. Search the website of the partner university for the application documents required.
  3. Contact your advisor/supervisor at Chula to discuss your plan to conduct your research oversea and get in touch with your supervisor at the partner university to find a suitable and negotiate the dates you will start and finish your research work at the partner university.
 

When to Apply

You may join the Chula Postgraduate Research Student Exchange Program all year round. Once you have prepared all required documents, we recommend that you submit application documents to the international coordinator at your Program/Faculty at least six months in advance before your proposed date starts.

 

How to Apply

  1. Contact your program/faculty coordinator and get a nomination letter from your Faculty affiliation.
  2. Get nominated by your Faculty coordinator.
  3. You will receive an application form from the OIA at Chula via email to fill in and upload related documents.
  4. The OIA will nominate you to the partner university of your choice.
  5. Complete and submit the application and required documents to the partner university.
  6. If the application is approved, you will receive your acceptance package.
  7. Contact your Faculty and/or Central Office of Registrar for further processes.
  8. Collect visa application documents at the OIA (if any).
  9. Proceed with logistic arrangement.
  10. Get ready and enjoy international experience.
