Overview

The Petrochemical and Polymer Program integrates five key departments: Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Physics, Imaging and Printing Technology, and Materials Science. This interdisciplinary program aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive understanding and practical expertise in petrochemical and polymer science. In Thailand, much of the technology and processes in this industry are imported, driving the program’s commitment to developing knowledge and innovations that align with international standards. A strong emphasis is placed on fostering environmentally sustainable technologies. The program offers a diverse range of courses that cover both chemical and physical aspects of petrochemical and polymer sciences. On the chemical side, students explore the synthesis and production of petroleum and polymers, while the physical curriculum delves into analyzing and testing the materials’ physical properties. Collaboration with private enterprises is actively encouraged, focusing on addressing industry challenges and advancing research initiatives. Additionally, the program invites recognized experts to serve as guest lecturers or thesis advisors, providing students with valuable insights and guidance.

The petrochemical and polymer industry is a significant sector not only for Thailand but also for many countries worldwide. Competition in Asia is intensifying, particularly in regions such as the Middle East, India, Japan, ASEAN countries, and China. For Thailand, it is essential to develop skilled professionals in this field to build a robust knowledge base and enhance the nation’s economic competitiveness on the global stage. Historically, much of the workforce in Thailand’s petrochemical and polymer industry consisted of foreign professionals or individuals with doctoral degrees earned abroad. Recognizing the importance of cultivating homegrown talent, the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University leverages its extensive resources—expertise, knowledge, research capabilities, state-of-the-art scientific equipment, classrooms, and research laboratories—to train professionals for the industry. The curriculum is designed with a strong emphasis on learning outcomes, aiming to produce graduates and research that directly address the country’s needs and priorities.

Dedication to producing highly qualified graduates

The program focuses on producing research that addresses problems, creates new knowledge, and develops master’s graduates in petrochemical and polymer sciences who possess deep knowledge. Graduates are equipped with research potential and the ability to apply scientific principles to industrial development, along with ethics and social responsibility. Additionally, the program integrates existing knowledge with societal issues. The program also aims to produce graduates, both in terms of knowledge and skills, meeting international standards and the needs of the industrial sector, while having environmental awareness, in aligning with the mission of Chulalongkorn University.

Why this program at Chula

The program is dedicated to producing research that addresses challenges, generates new knowledge, and develops master’s graduates who are experts with in-depth understanding in petrochemical and polymer sciences.
